First of all, thanks so much for reading the blog and listening to the podcast this season, and the previous one too! It’s been so much fun to give myself writing and creative challenges. And so gratifying to hear your positive comments, and indeed constructive criticism. For those of you who I don’t know but have followed me, or liked a post, thank you so much for your interest. I promise to get back to you soon, if I haven’t already.
A note about Espanglisher:
This started as a project I’d wanted to bring to the public eye for many years. I had so many ideas I wanted to share, through short stories and articles, and, via the Podcast, talk about my passion for language and culture, specifically English and Spanish. And to see if I could do it. It’s been many, many hours of learning and putting into practice, editing, recording, researching and thinking. But so much fun!
I think it’s abundantly clear that I am passionate about language, linguistics, reading and writing. Espanglisher is the Musings of a Lingua-Logo-Biblio-Anglo-Hispanophile, and specifically relating to English and Spanish. But what does that really mean? I’ve never studied linguistics, though I was close to choosing it as a degree. In the end I went for Spanish and Drama as I am eternally indecisive and wanted to combine as many of my interests as possible in one degree. But I digress. I suppose, on the one hand, story telling when I was a child, whether it was me or someone else doing it, was a starting point for wider reading and writing, and has always been a part of my life. I’ve written stories since I was kneehigh to a grasshopper, and however awful they were, or indeed still are, it’s like I don’t care, I just enjoy playing with words and my often weird imagination.
And the linguistics? That’s a little harder to describe. I don’t know why I am so fascinated by the roots of words and phrases, the similarities, links or often complete dissonance, if that word is appropriate, between languages. I don’t know why I feel so satisfied and even excited when I see links between words of different languages, or indeed links from old language to modern of the same nation… I don’t know why. Honestly. But I do.
Yes, I grew up in an environment not only open to but also encouraging curiosity for languages and culture, yes, I work as an English teacher, yes, I speak two and a bit languages, (that means many years of French, most of which I have since forgotten, but could survive if it was suddenly the universal language, I think, and two years of German which left me with three phrases that I remember and three or four bits of vocabulary).
I suppose my point is that, for me, language is an ever-evolving, beautiful creature. And I say creature because it is alive. It’s like a friend I can play with, passively or actively, through reading, writing and discovering and it gives me so much pleasure, and always will.
